The exam
The LRC (Long Range Certificate) is the general radio operator certificate for worldwide marine radio and extends the SRC with shortwave and satellite communication. In Germany the exam is taken with the examination committees of the DMYV and DSV, and the theory part draws on the official catalogue of 76 questions. Who actually needs the LRC?
Anyone planning to communicate beyond VHF range: on long-distance passages, ocean crossings or yachts equipped with shortwave or satellite installations, the LRC is the required general operator certificate. If your radio use stays within coastal waters, the SRC is sufficient.
How does the LRC differ from the SRC?
The SRC is limited to marine VHF and shorter ranges, while the LRC is valid worldwide and includes shortwave and satellite communication – it is effectively the SRC's big sibling for blue-water sailing. Do I have to hold the SRC before taking the LRC?
The usual route runs from SRC to LRC, since the LRC builds on and extends the VHF marine radio content.
