The exam
The SRC (Short Range Certificate) is the restricted radio operator certificate for marine VHF within GMDSS and is mandatory when you operate a pleasure craft with a fixed VHF marine radio installation. In Germany, the exam is taken with the examination committees of the DMYV and DSV; the theory part is based on the official catalogue of 180 questions. Is the app available in English?
No – all study content is in German. The questions, answers and explanations follow the official German ELWIS catalogue that the exam in Germany is built on, and no English translation of that content exists in the app. Only this information page is in English.
When do I actually need the SRC?
As soon as you operate a pleasure craft with a built-in VHF marine radio, the SRC is compulsory – regardless of whether you intend to transmit yourself. Many charter companies also insist on the certificate before handing over a yacht with a radio installation.
What separates the SRC from the LRC?
The SRC covers marine VHF radio for coastal waters, whereas the LRC (Long Range Certificate) is the general operator certificate for worldwide marine radio including shortwave and satellite. Coastal cruising is fine with the SRC; if a blue-water passage is on your horizon, we offer a dedicated LRC app with all official questions for that exam.
Does the SRC cover rivers and canals too?
It does not. Radio communication on German inland waterways requires the UBI, the VHF certificate for inland waterway radio. We offer a separate UBI app, so if your sailing takes you both to sea and inland, you can prepare for the second certificate in parallel.
